SELECTIONS FROM THE SIKH SCRIPTURES RELATED TO ZIRAAT

From the Guru Granth Sahib

The True Lord Himself knows all; He makes no mistakes. He is the Great Farmer of the Universe. First, He prepares the ground, and then He plants the Seed of the True Name.

Make good deeds the soil, and let the Word of the Shabad (unstruck Divine Sound) be the seed; irrigate it continually with the water of Truth. Become such a farmer, and faith will sprout.

He Himself is the field, and He Himself is the farmer. He Himself grows and grinds the corn. He Himself cooks it, He Himself puts the food in the dishes, and He Himself sits down to eat. He Himself is the water, He Himself gives the tooth-pick, and He Himself offers the mouthwash. He Himself calls and seats the congregation, and He Himself bids them goodbye. One whom the Lord Himself blesses with His Mercy - the Lord causes him to walk according to His Will.

Make your mind the farmer, good deeds the farm, modesty the water, and your body the field. Let the Lord's Name be the seed, contentment the plow, and your humble dress the fence.Doing deeds of love, the seed shall sprout, and you shall see your home flourish.

As the farmer protects his fields; as the mother and father show compassion to their child; as the lover merges on seeing the beloved; just so does the Lord hug His humble servant close in His Embrace.

I have hooked up the plow of Truth, and I plant the seed of the Name in hopes that the Lord, in His Generosity, will bestow a bountiful harvest.

Make the Fear of God the farm, purity the water, truth and contentment the cows and bulls, humility the plow, consciousness the plowman, remembrance the preparation of thesoil, and union with the Lord the planting time. Let the Lord's Name be the seed, and His Forgiving Grace the harvest.
